ABOUT JHASW/CHIDC
Jewish History Association of South Wales/Cymdeithas Hanes Iddewig De Cymru (JHASW/CHIDC) was formed in 2017 with the aim to:
– Preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Jewish communities of south Wales and surrounding areas, including (but not limited to) historical records, artefacts, and oral histories.
– Make these historical records, artefacts, and oral histories available to members of the public, following recognised archives’ and museums’ cataloguing standards.
– Promote, raise awareness, and enhance public knowledge of the Jewish heritage in south Wales by any means available.
The aim of the project is to provide training in heritage-based skills, together with an opportunity to apply these skills in a practical, hands-on setting.
Volunteers will be working with the historical records of Cardiff Reform Synagogue (e.g., minute books, financial records, letters, photographs, etc.).
The skills developed during this project will be transferable and can be applied to many areas within the heritage sector.
Volunteering role:
As part of this role, volunteers will:
1. Assess and sort the records.
2. List the records for deposit with Glamorgan Archives.
3. Digitise (scan or photograph) the records.
4. Label each record and its digital counterpart.
5. Edit the digital images for publication on the People’s Collection Wales website.
6. Catalogue digitised records, using Dublin Core standards, for publication on People’s Collection Wales.
Requirements:
Essential:
• Organised, reliable, and able to deliver a task to a set deadline.
• Attention to detail.
• Excellent command of English; ability to write in a clear and concise manner.
• Willingness to work as part of a team.
• Willingness to learn and improve your skills.
Desirable:
• Interest in history and heritage.
• Knowledge of People’s Collection Wales.
What volunteers will gain:
• Training in Handling Archival Material.
• Training in Listing Archival Documents for Deposit.
• Training in Copyright and GDPR.
• Training in Digitisation and Metadata.
• Training in using image-editing software (Gimp).
• Practical experience in cataloguing and listing archival records.
• Accreditation in ‘Digitising materials for museums, libraries and archives’, Level 2, Credit 3, from Agored Cymru (optional).
• An opportunity to improve your CV and increase your employability.
• A reference from JHASW/CHIDC (subject to volunteering requirements being met).

Additional information:
Location: Cardiff Reform Synagogue, Moira Terrace, Cardiff, CF24 0EJ.
Travel expenses will be reimbursed (Cardiff public transport).
Days and times of volunteering: every Monday and Thursday, 09:00-13:00.
The minimum required number of hours a volunteer must contribute per week: eight.
Duration: five months:
• Start date: 06 November 2023.
• End Date: 04 April 2024.
Important:
To ensure they gain skills and experience, the volunteers must confirm they are likely to be available on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 November 2023 to 4 April 2024.
