Organisation’s profile:
Jewish History Association of South Wales/Cymdeithas Hanes Iddewig De Cymru (JHASW/CHIDC) was formed in 2017 with the aim to:
- Preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Jewish communities of south Wales and surrounding areas, including (but not limited to) historical records, artefacts, and oral histories.
- Make these historical records, artefacts, and oral histories available to members of the public, following recognised archives’ and museums’ cataloguing standards.
- Promote, raise awareness, and enhance public knowledge of the Jewish heritage in south Wales by any means available.
Project’s outline:
The aim of the project is to provide training in heritage-based skills, together with an opportunity to apply these skills in a practical, hands-on setting.
Volunteers will be working with the historical records of Cardiff Reform Synagogue (e.g., minute books, financial records, letters, photographs, etc.).
The skills developed during this project will be transferable and can be applied to many areas within the heritage sector.
Volunteering role:
As part of this role, volunteers will:
- Digitise (scan or photograph) the records.
- Label each record and its digital counterpart.
- Edit the digital images for publication on the People’s Collection Wales website.
We created two volunteering opportunities for this project. In addition to this role, we are also recruiting for a Volunteer Archive Co-ordinator. Volunteers may participate in one or both roles, depending on their interests, expectations, and time availability.

Essential:
- Organised, reliable, and able to deliver a task to a set deadline
- Attention to detail
- Willingness to work as part of a team
- Willingness to learn and improve your skills
Desirable:
- Interest in history and heritage
- Interest in creating digital outputs
What you will gain:

- Training in using image-editing software (Gimp).
- Accreditation in ‘Digitising materials for museums, libraries and archives’, Level 2, Credit 3, from Agored Cymru (optional).

- A reference from JHASW/CHIDC (on delivery of the task).
Additional information:
Location: hybrid working – Cardiff Reform Synagogue and remotely (from home).
Travel expenses will be reimbursed (Cardiff public transport).
