With your support we can help more people with a learning disability to shine. Specialist support at the right time is vital in helping people develop the essential skills and confidence to thrive and feel equal in society.
About this service:
We offer a lifelong befriending service for people with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of individual people with a learning disability.
Our visitors visit six times a year to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy and check-in on their wellbeing.
In many cases, our visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.
Befriending Role –
As part of the Mencap Visiting Service we are looking for a volunteer to visit a lovely lady in her early 70’s who has learning disabilities.
She is very sociable and enjoys spending time with friends. She really enjoys listening to music – especially Roy Orbison and Cliff Richard! She loves nice things – jewellery is a particular favourite.
Visits will take place at her home where you can chat over a cup of tea. This role is perfect for someone who is patient and understanding. Ideally you will have experience in learning disabilities.
You will be introduced and get to know her with the support of her carer.
She will really enjoy spending time with a friendly volunteer like you! By visiting every other month – you will make a huge difference.
When & where do I need to be available?
• Visits will be every 2 months during the week
• Visits will last around an 1 hour
Before applying please check your journey to make sure it’s practical for you.
As a Mencap Visiting Volunteer you will be:
• Aged 18 or over
• Friendly, patient and reliable
