Post: Volunteer Archive Assistant
Contract: Initially three months Responsible to: Office Manager Hours: 6-12 hours per week Location: Cardiff This volunteering opportunity is open to everyone, but we especially encourage applications from Gypsies and Travellers.
Organisation’s profile: Working since 1981 for a Wales where Gypsies and Travellers can enjoy equal rights and opportunities. We help Gypsies and Travellers, providing support, advocacy, and advice. We are a strong voice, campaigning with and for Gypsies and Travellers to champion their rights, needs and wishes. We offer confidential, impartial, and expert information, advice and training to professionals, public services and organisations seeking to improve their services.
We have work mainly in and around Cardiff, Newport, and Torfaen but also more widely across Wales.
Our objectives are:
To ensure suitable, safe, good quality accommodation for all Gypsies and Travellers To improve access to and effectiveness of public services for Gypsies and Travellers To challenge discriminatory behaviour and attitudes towards Gypsies and Travellers To increase the educational attainment, confidence to participate as active citizens and employability prospects of Gypsies and Travellers
We have 10 paid staff, delivering services under the direction of the Coordinator and we are governed by a Board of Trustees. Over the years, Gypsies and Travellers Wales (GT Wales) has developed a range of core services. Our core activities are: · The provision of advice and information · Advocacy service · Tenancy support service · Employment and skills services · Professional training and Consultancy · Wellbeing
Volunteering role: Volunteers will be working with the historical records of Gypsies and Travellers Wales (e.g., minute books, financial records, letters, photographs, Literature etc.) The skills developed during this project will be transferable and can be applied to many areas within the heritage sector. As part of this role, volunteers will: 1. Assess and sort the records 2. Catalogue records via Excel Spreadsheet 3. List the records for deposit with Glamorgan Archives.
Skills required Essential: · Organised, reliable, and able to deliver a task to a set deadline · Attention to detail · Excellent command of English; ability to write in a clear and concise manner · Willingness to work as part of a team · Willingness to learn and improve your skills
Desirable: · Interest in history and heritage

Additional information: Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
